Alec & Jo Moore of Weeran Angus were very happy with the results of their 4th annual spring bull sale held on Wednesday 8th September. Dinky Di and Genesis sons were highly sought after. Dinky Di is an outstanding calving ease sire with excellent growth and carcase figures and a long fed CAAB index of $135. The industry as a whole has been very excited with this sire. His numbers were outstanding and he had been used in two breeding seasons at Weeran. He was a highly graded bull for structure by Dick Whale. The average for the sale was $3741, with very similar average and numbers of bulls selling in 2009. Alec said “there is a demand to supply Angus genetics for both autumn and spring joining, and Weeran will definitely run two sales a year, being February and September.
Buyers travelled from SA, NSW, and throughout Victoria. There were many repeat buyers, including volume buyer Nareen Station who purchased 11 bulls. Nareen Station have been using Weeran bulls since 1998, and “apart from their genetic merit, we have been impressed by the temperament and after sales service from Alec & Jo”. “We work our bulls twice a year and they easily retain their health and vigour”, said Gordon Dickinson (owner) and Grant Little (Manager) of Nareen Station. Repeat buyers included Legoe Farms, SA; Mepungah Pastoral, Wannon; Linlithgow Plains, Dunkeld; Mt Fyans Black Angus, Darlington; P Taylor, Byaduk and Eulo Pastoral, Caramut.

BREEDING BETTER BEEF, SOWING SPECIAL SEEDS
– A FAMILY AFFAIR
A new ‘hands-on’ approach to field days is soon to be trialled at Byaduk. Alec Moore is putting his brother-in-law Stewart Sutherland to the test by trialing varieties from Upper Murray Seeds (in the State’s northeast) on his home property Weerangourt in the west.
This trial will demonstrate grasses, cereals and legume varieties and their suitability to the Hamilton district. In conjunction with Upper Murray Seeds, Alec has developed a demonstration site at Weerangourt which will highlight the benefits not only of sowing pastures, but also summer cropping and grazing cereals.
The idea came from family gatherings including ‘friendly’ discussions about how to put improved Angus genetics and seed varieties to the test.
During the current tough droughts and lower than average rainfalls, many seed varieties are not performing and farmers are faced with costly resowing, poor fodder conservation, and reduced dry matter production. The majority of forage grasses are bred overseas and are not robust enough for Australia. Consequently, over the past 15 years, Upper Murray Seeds has been focusing on providing seed of the highest quality that combines performance with persistence. A private research and development facility is breeding alternative varieties, which are helping to boost the farmer’s bottom line during this run of dry times.
“Seeing is believing,” says Upper Murray Seeds general manager, Stewart Sutherland: "We find that open days give everyone a chance to get down and see the plants perform in a field situation. You can guarantee family will give you honest feedback and we value their opinion.”
The family assessment works in both directions. Tooma Station – the Sutherland family property, has been purchasing Weeran bulls for over 10 years and the herd genetics are well established in their 1000-cow herd at Tooma, NSW. When Alec and Jo Moore visit, they are able to assess first hand how Weeran bulls are performing in a commercial situation, and in country that is significantly different to the Hamilton area.
“We are extremely pleased with not only the physical structure and soundness of the herd but also in their results in the market place. Ease of calving and low birth weights are very important to our operation,” said Mr John Sutherland, father of both Stewart Sutherland and Jo Moore. “This year we only had to assist in 4 heifer calvings which was an excellent result”
The Weerangourt Field Day starts at 10.00am with a discussion at the trial site on the Hamilton-Port Fairy Road. A farm walk of pastures under grazing management, and pastures locked up for fodder conservation will follow.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Alec and Jo Moore invite everyone to join them and Upper Murray Seeds staff for BBQ lunch afterwards.
When: 10.00am, Wednesday 21 October 2009
Where: Weerangourt, 5395 Hamilton Port Fairy Road, Byaduk

WEERAN ANGUS SPRING BULLS IN DEMAND
The 3rd annual Weeran Angus Spring Bull sale was very successful, with 32 of 33 bulls selling to a top of $8,000 and an average of $3,789. This was the best clearance and average across the spring bull sales for Weeran.
The bulls presented in excellent condition and were an extremely powerful group of bulls. With a very windy day, buyers travelled from South East South Australia, NSW, Gippsland and many from the local area. Alec Moore said it was a fantastic result for them. “We put a lot of work into the bulls this year and thought they presented very well”. “ I’m very pleased with the clearance. With repeat buyers coming back time again, proves the success their herds are having using Weeran genetics.” There were many repeat buyers from our local area, including Nareen, Mepungah Pastoral, the Glare, Lewis and Whyte families. We are very appreciative of the support shown to Weeran Angus.
Weeran also welcomed new buyers to their sale including Mt Schanck Estate, Mt Gambier, who purchased three bulls, including the top price bull for $8,000. Weeran Dunoon W200 C309 was a stand out bull and used in the Weeran program last spring. He is a stand out calving ease sire, with a birthweight ebv of 3.9 to 93 for 600 day wt. Structurally he graded very high with a 6 from Dick Whale.
Our thanks to Elders who conducted the sale with Ross Milne as auctioneer.

WEERAN GENETICS . . . LEADING FEEDLOT PERFORMERS!
Weeran Angus will offer 48 bulls in their autumn sale on Tuesday 24th February 2009. Industry leading bulls for production and dollar return will go through the ring. Sons of Ardrossan Direction X3 and X15, BT Equator, Ambush 28, Ardrossan Admiral A2, Baldridge Nebraska, Circle 8 Houndog X78, BT Touchdown 14N, and Highline Right Time 338, will impress you.
Outstanding bulls include Weeran C089, an Ardrossan Admiral son, with growth figures of 6 to 115, EMA of 3.2 and IMF 1.1 and a B3 index of 102. Weeran C213 (tested AM Free), an Ardrossan X15 son, growth of 6.3 to 105, EMA 5.2 and IMF 1.3 and a B3 index of 109 with milk of 14. Weeran C546, a son of Right Time 338, has growth figures 4.1 to 110, EMA of 4.7, IMF of 1.0 and B3 of 102 with milk 12. Our Feedlot client, Rangers Valley Cattle Station’s main profit driver is growth with carcase quality. This is an area Weeran Angus continues to excel in with very exciting results. As you can see by these bulls, we are continuing to select cattle that deliver in these key areas.
All Weeran Angus bulls are fully fertility guaranteed for their first joining. An area that continues to cause some clients concern at joining is physical breakdowns in multiple mating herds using more than 3 bulls at a time. It is my belief that when mating cows in relatively confined fenced areas, that to use more than 2 bulls increases the likelihood of physical damage to bulls in use. In the wild as all of you know, males protect and fight for their breeding groups, often resulting in death or severe injury to the up and coming males. My recommendation is to maximise the numbers of cows to approx. 140 – 160 to two bulls, check breeding soundness before mating, initiate the joining 10 days earlier than normal, check bulls on a daily basis, change over with another 2 fresh bulls at day 25 and continue joining for another 39 days, being a total of 64 days. Another fresh single bull to back up at day 45 is recommended. The advantage of this system is the working bulls can always monitor where the second bull is if confrontation is likely. When you have a third or fourth in the mix, it is very difficult for confrontation to be successfully avoided. If people prefer tighter joinings, then I recommend early pregnancy scanning to identify early pregnancies with late pregnancies being selected out.
The Moore family welcomes you to Weeran Beef Week on Friday 6th February and their annual autumn bull sale on Tuesday 24th February. BBQ and refreshments will be available on both days.
For further information, contact Alec on 0438 787258.

WEERAN SPRING SALE A SUCCESS!
The Weeran Spring selling program in its second year, achieved a good result, with an increase of top price paid to $6,500, and an increase of 42% in number of bulls sold. 30 bulls sold from an offering of 42 for an average of $3300.
The name of the game in the seedstock industry is to get bulls in the paddock generating profits for clients, and Weeran is achieving that. Weeran Angus principal Alec Moore sees the need to supply Angus genetics for both autumn and spring joinings, and Weeran will continue to run two sales a year, being February and September.
Outstanding support was given by Nareen Station with 9 purchases, Rosverland Farms with 5 purchases, and Dandite Pty Ltd, Tooma Station and the Legoe Partnership all buying 3 bulls. All are repeat clients to Weeran Angus. South East South Australia were solid with their support of the sale which is very pleasing to see. Mepungah Pastoral Co, Jigsaw Farms and The Hummocks were all repeat buyers. The Moore family are grateful for continued support from these clients.
Top price of $6,500 was paid by Tooma Station, NSW for Lot 3 New Frontier B136. An excellent New Frontier son who has been used heavily in the Weeran herd, backing up the 2007 a.i. heifer program. A number of good cattle judges described him as an outstanding individual in all respects.
Second top price of $5,500 was paid by Jason Sutherland, from Robe for another New Frontier son, Lot 7 B51. A bull which stacks carcase quality and has excellent calving ease and growth pedigree.
The sale was conducted by Elders Hamilton. For further information, contact Alec & Jo Moore on 55 787258 or www.weeranangus.com.au

WEERAN KICKS ANGUS SALES OFF WITH SUCCESS
Weeran Angus held their 18th Autumn Bull Sale on Tuesday 26th February, 2008, being the first Angus sale for the district. It was a very successful day held in beautiful autumn conditions. The spring 2006 drop bulls displayed extremely well with a number of reputable judges describing them as ‘the best and most even line of bulls to be offered by Weeran’. The bulls showed magnificent temperament and presented very well.
48 bulls sold at auction to a top of $8,000 and averaged $3750. The most popular sire line was Ardrossan X3 who had 12 sons offered and all sold with a top of $8000 and an average of $4854. “This sire has a star studded pedigree and is a growth trait leader for 200, 400 day and eye muscle area. He puts amazing thickness into his progeny with great capacity”, said Weeran Principal Alec Moore. Also in demand were the Hyline 338 bulls, who all sold for an average of $4667. A great curve bending sire who is covering the bases very well for carcase and maternal traits.
Top price of $8000 was paid by the Rentsch Family of Byaduk who purchased Lot 13, Direction X3 B128. Alec Moore described him as the very best on offer at the Weeran sale, with a champion pedigree. Weeran used him over heifers and has every confidence in him. With a birthweight EBV of 3.7 to a 600 day EBV of 90, including EMA of 3.6, makes this sire a great beef industry bull. The Rentsch family also purchased Direction X3 B338 and Dunoon W200 B400.
Repeat buyer Peter and Anna Delany of Murroa East purchased 3 bulls, with one being the second top price of the day at $7250. Right Time B188 “ is a top young bull who we will watch with great interest” said Alec Moore. Used at Weeran over heifers, he has a birthweight EBV of 3.4 to a 600 day wt of 91, with excellent structure and type. Peter was looking for bulls with outcross pedigrees to broaden their genetic pool, also purchasing BT Touchdown B32 and Hyline Paradigm B181. All bulls are extremely powerful, heavily fleshed with the Paradigm son being in the top 1% for retail beef yield. These added genetic lines will be of great value in the future to their breeding program.
Agent support was wide spread, but special acknowledgement must go to Andrew Gunn of Elders Hamilton who is consistently assisting the Weeran team.
Alec and Jo Moore were delighted to have volume buyers at the sale, including J Tischler of Byaduk, M Storer of Hotspur and R Giles of Lucindale. Bulls were sold into South Australia, Tasmania and throughout Victoria. Interested breeders also travelled from W.A. and NSW to be at the sale. It was a very positive sale and the Moore family are looking forward to presenting a similar line of bulls in September for their 2nd Spring Bull Sale. Alec & Jo would like to thank everyone for attending and supporting the Weeran program.
