A LEGEND OF THE ANGUS BREED VISITS WEERAN!

The Weeran Angus team were lucky enough recently to have a legend of the American Angus Breed, Bill and Barbara Rishel of B/R Angus, Nebraska tour our property inspecting our herd. Bill’s genetics, namely B/R New Design 036 and progeny have had a big influence on the Angus breed worldwide, and here at Weeran.
Bill said ‘they saw many good Angus cattle in Australia, and the cattle at Weeran were no exception. I was particularly impressed with several mobs of those young first calf heifers that you showed us. These females were the right kind for me. They were the frame size I like, very correct structurally, extremely good uddered, and were raising a very stout set of calves. I have always said that the females will make the difference in any breeding program. If you keep the cow herd heading in the right direction, everything else will fall into place and you will produce a top set of bulls for your clientele. I think you should be very pleased with the direction of your breeding program.”
It is always pleasing and informative to hear comments from other noted judges of the Angus breed, said Weeran Principal, Alec Moore. Bill has a tried and proven methodology to breeding better, productive, value adding cattle. That is, to keep your mistakes to a minimum or as he said, ‘the number of animals on the scrap pile’. When this becomes your aim, everything else will follow. Concentrate on raising the quality of your breeding herd, and then with closer analysis of this breeding nucleus, the cream will rise to the top. If you have a high risk program, that is not properly thought out, you will, on average, have more failures than success.
Weeran Angus will be offering 55 bulls in their on property autumn bull sale on Tuesday 19th February, 2013 at 1pm. On offer will be bulls sired by TC Franklin 619, TeMania Africa A217, B/R Future Direction 4268, and Silveiras M811 Total. Other sires Alpine Candybar C178, Alpine Dinky C106, Sitz New Design 458N and Ardrossan D19. These sires are all industry leading genetics which will propel our herd, and yours, into the future. Weeran’s objective is to produce the full package of phenotype and balanced performance data with more emphasis on higher indexing bulls. Weeran is supplying this with a quiet, well developed animal who will visually, and on paper, impress.
Weeran has a strong commercial focus with a cow herd which is rigorously challenged to meet stringent seedstock and commercial relevance.

WEERAN BULLS FOR CALVING EASE

This years’ line up of sale bulls are a powerful group of young bulls, pushing the boundaries for the B3 and grass fed markets. Greater emphasis has also been placed on calving ease, with the leading calving ease sire being used extensively in the herd, Dinky-Di Z191. With a calving ease ebv of +5.1, birth weight of +2.1 and 600 day weight of +100, he is a highly sought after sire. We have some “rippers” for calving ease, said Weeran Principle Alec Moore. Dinky-Di is in the top 1% for the breed for calving ease.

50 bulls will be on offer at the 20th annual Autumn Bull Sale on Tuesday 23rd February, 2010 at 1.00pm. Other leading sires include Genesis, Equator and New Design 0321. Genesis is another very exciting B3 sire with top 5% calving ease & growth/carcase which puts the B3 index in the top 1% for the breed. Equator is a sire who exhibits growth & carcase performance in big doses with an out cross pedigree. Calving ease is a high priority, and Dunoon Midland A17 is an outcross sire with excellent all round performance. He has growth & carcase ebv's in the top 1%, and top 10% for calving ease and is a good heifer bull. Other sires include New Frontier, Ambush, X15, X3 and Touchdown.

Once again the client incentive of purchasing 5 bulls for a 5% discount will be in place. A comprehensive guarantee and free delivery up to 150kms.

The 620 Weeran cow herd continue to produce fantastic genetics. A beautiful herd, with great temperament and maternal traits. The next load of steers has just left Weeran Angus for Rangers Valley Feedlot for the 11th consecutive year. The kill data continues to be well above average.

Also for sale will be 100 Angus females aged 2 ½ and 3 ½ surplus to Weeran’s requirements. WEERAN OUTSTANDING FEEDLOT RESULTS - August 08
Once again Weeran Angus has received outstanding feedlot results recently with the ’08 kill data from Rangers Valley Feedlot. Richard Eldershaw of Rangers Valley said “we were pleased to be offered the Weeran steers again in ’07, and as usual they Photos courtesy of Rangers Valley Feedlotperformed above average for growth and marbling. It is a credit to their program and management.” Weeran achieved average marble score of 3.7 which is 28% above feedlot average. Last years’ kill data showed Weeran steers were second highest for growth and marbling, so it is very exciting to see the continued success of our program, said Alec Moore

Weeran Angus will offer 45 top performance bulls for sale in their second annual on property spring bull sale on Wednesday September 10.
Sons of Gardens Highmark, Ardrossan Direction X3, BT Touchdown 14N, Highline Right Time 338, Younkin Triumph 4966, and B/R New Frontier 095 will impress you. All bulls are backed by the excellent Weeran guarantee.
An example of some of the leading progeny being offered, is a son of Gardens Highmark, Weeran B260, who packs a very powerful growth and carcase package, being +6 to +98 in growth, and a carcase data being +52 for carcase, +3.2 for EMA and +2 for IMF. An outstanding set of paperwork, which excels in the two fundamentals of feedlot profitabililty, being growth and carcase quality. A B/R New Frontier son, who we used heavily last spring, Weeeran B136, has outstanding phenotype and with growth figures of +5 to +86, and quality carcase numbers, makes him another standout. He backed up an a.i. program of 100 plus heifers very successfully.Photo courtesy of Rangers Valley Feedlot

The Weeran 640 cow herd uses US bulls with proven carcase data for 70% of the a.i. matings. These are inspected for structural soundness, along with a large sample of their 18 mths or older progeny. We are also progeny testing young up and coming Weeran sires and other Australian bred sires where we know the female base and the operation’s integrity. The result is ‘Weeran genetics hitting the target’.

WEERAN PROVIDING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF PROFITABILITY - January 08
With spiraling costs of cereal grains and feedlots decreasing the days on feed, it has become even more important for their bottom line, to purchase cattle that provide the fundamentals of profitability being growth and marbling. This is an area where Weeran genetics have proven their superiority based on exciting results from Rangers Valley Feedlot. An example in the difference in the Japanese marketplace, is one marble score difference in the Angus imported steer carcase market, is worth 12 – 15% more which can equate to a carcase value increase of approx $500. As you can see, if your cattle can consistently marble half a marble score better, it will be a huge profit driver for your customer. This information has been sourced from the Agricultural and Livestock Industries Corporation website.

It has been well promoted that Weeran Angus genetics are performing extremely well. The Weeran steers were second highest growth and second highest marbling out of 60 plus vendors who had cattle dispatched in February 07 through Rangers Valley Cattle Station. ie. The fundamentals of profitability in a feedlot being gain on feed and marbling.

Weeran will be offering 63 bulls in their autumn bull sale on Tuesday 26th February, 2008 at 1pm. A cracking line up of bulls that Alec Moore, Principal of Weeran Angus said “will compare with the best in the country for ability to gain and marble”. Exciting genetics that have been replicated in our a.i. dominated spring breeding program include sires; Ardrossan X3, BR Touchdown 14N, BR New Frontier 095, Hyline Right Time 338, Baldridge Nebraska 901, Gardens Highmark, Dunoon W200, and Younkin Triumph.
A number of Weeran sale bulls will be on display at Hamilton Beef Expo on February 7th & 8th. A great opportunity, in a relaxed environment, to inspect some of the bulls and discuss breeding programs and requirements. Weeran will also be involved in the ‘Pen of 3 Bulls’ competition – an honest appraisal of bulls using Group Breedplan EBV’s and visual appraisal. This combination is the only way to appraise cattle for their true attributes accurately. Beef Expo are to be congratulated on running a competition that considers the two key elements on sire selection – EBV’s and visual. They complement each other and must be used together! Weeran Angus are very proud of the integrity of their data and the quality of its collection.

Weeran . . . cutting edge, affordable genetics! - January 08
Weeran Angus will be offering 63 bulls at their on property autumn bull sale on Tuesday 26th February at 1pm. Weeran is an elite seedstock herd with honesty and integrity of data collection and production system. They are in the business of producing ‘real beef industry cattle’, not Hollywood or high maintenance cattle that will cost you an arm and a leg. Cutting edge genetics, yet still affordable for the commercial producer.
Weeran Angus genetics are performing well for the feedlot industry. Dick Whale of Independent Breeding and Marketing Services said “It is very pleasing to see proof of our genetic selection process bearing fruit. The Weeran program has been based around using US bulls with proven carcase data for approx 70% of the A.I. matings. These sires are inspected for structural soundness, along with a large sample of their progeny 18 months of age, or older. On top of this Alec & I are progeny testing with young unproven Australian bred sires from within the Weeran herd, and others where we know the female base and the integrity of their operation.”

“Also of paramount importance in our selection criteria is the use of the US carcase kill data. Approx 40 million cattle are killed in the US per year and assessed using their quality grading system. We are basing our selection process on kill data rather than IMF scan data, as carcases around the world are valued and traded on their actual marbling. This includes cattle in Australia produced for the Japanese grain fed markets”.

“This is why I believe Weeran is achieving such good results at Rangers Valley”, said Dick Whale.

Exciting genetics will be offered in the sale including sons of Ardrossan Direction X3, growth trait leader for 200, 400 day and eye muscle area; New Frontier has 12,000 progeny on the ground across 1,600 herds – say no more; Touchdown calves at Weeran are long bodied and sleek skinned with balanced growth curve and excellent carcase figures; Baldridge Nebraska is a great calving ease bull Weeran has used over their most powerful females; Highmark has had 3 drops of calves at Weeran and is showing consistent marbling and high growth. Also sons by Hyline Right Time, Younkin Triumph, Dunoon W200, Leachman Explorer, Perry Power Design, Dunoon Reagan and other leading sires.

Weeran will be part of Hamilton Beef Expo with the Pen of 3 Bulls Competition and trade display. We look forward to discussing breeding programs and genetics in a relaxed environment.
